Prof. Fabiana Hernández Reflecting upon the rich mixture of students’ backgrounds in a classroom, I cannot help thinking that teaching a second language is much more than merely teaching the four skills. In order to do our job effectively, we must offer students a wide variety of strategies that allow them to become autonomous learners. Putting the blame on them every time they do not know a word, tense, structure, format, or answer is just the easiest way out. We must leave our comfort zone and understand that we cannot take things for granted. Could it be that they truly did not get the question, or did not have enough exposure to a certain piece of information, or were not taught in the proper way? Might it be that they have not yet learned how to study? If you stop to think about this, you will be surprised to find out that, many times, we discover the resourceful teacher within when pushed to go the extra mile. After starting that journey, both you and your students are going to confirm that, the secret of effective learning relies in the power of connecting past successes with future actions. Once we do something that is successful, we continue doing it that way. We hit those buttons and we make it happen!
| Wikis + Digital Tech = Win-Win Combination.Prof. William MachadoProf. Valeria Guerra It is undeniable that most students are immersed in a world that is full of technology. From smart phones to iPods our students are exposed to technology 24/7; therefore, it’s clear that our teaching practices have to be updated in order to fulfill all the expectations brought about by these new technologies. As a consequence, it is the objective of this presentation to share why and show how to transform traditional activities into their digital-era version using wikis as a tool that might integrate these activities. see the presentationwilliam.machado@alianza.edu.uyvaleria.guerra@alianza.edu.uy
